Paraprofessionals and the Autism Classroom

This workshop presents an overview of autism for the paraprofessional/classroom aide. For many students with autism and other developmental disabilities, the classroom para is a very important part of their educational program. Many paras are with their students throughout the school day and their responsibilities are varied. The objectives for this session are as follows:
  • To gain an understanding of the diagnosis of autism and its characteristics
  • To gain an overview of key strategies for educating and intervening with students with ASD
  • To gain a basic understanding of how and why problem behavior occurs and steps to treat it
