Autism Recognition and Response for School Nurses

Health care professionals need to prepare, be creative, and have a sense of humor when caring for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other developmental disabilities.  In general, children with autism have greater difficulty understanding and responding appropriately to potentially dangerous items or situations. This workshop will help the school nurse understand:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorders and their characteristics and features
  • School nurse's role in meeting the educational and safety needs of their students with ASD
  • Strengths and challenges for students with ASD
  • Importance of school-based teams to minimize risk and maximize learning
  • Examination and communication techniques
